The first year of NESREA has been more of defining the direction and focus of the Agency, strengthening and building institutional capacity, and seeking partnerships with the public and private sector, at local and international levels, in the implementation of the Agency’s mandate. There had been series of conferences, workshops and seminars, as well as meetings and consultations with the Development Partners, the civil society organizations, the line Ministries and Agencies of the Governments at both federal and state levels. Some other major activities and accomplishments of the Agency todate include:
- Retreat for Top Management Staff of NESREA, culminating in the development of the Strategic Action Plan of the Agency;
- Consultations with Stakeholders and Donor Communities including World Bank, UNDP, United Nations Donor Coordinating Group On Environment (DCGE), etc, towards exploring areas of collaboration and partnership;
- Courtesy calls and Advocacy visits to State Governments to seek for partnership;
- Consultations and partnership with the public and private sector, eg.:
- Partners for water and Sanitation (PAWS-UK) with whom an MoU for Partnership has been signed,
- Meeting with the Nigerian Tanners (Tannery’s) Council,
- Africa Clean – Nigeria,
- Nigerian Foundation Conservation and Amnesty international,
- Food Beverages and Tobacco Employers Association,
- Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA);
- Public Education and Awareness on the Mandates of NESREA in the Electronic media;
- Organised a Chat with Media Executives to sensitise them on the mandate of NESREA.
- Undertook inspection of some industrial facilities across the nation to ascertain their level of compliance;
- Responses and interventions to Public Complaints;
- Ongoing implementation of the National Urban Air Quality Monitoring and Vehicular Emission Programme;
- Hosted the 1st National Stakeholders’ Forum on “The New Mechanism for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development in Nigeria”:
- The theme of the Forum was “ensuring a safer and cleaner environment in Nigeria through partnerships”.
- The Forum also served as a formal launch and roll out campaign of NESREA.
